An important theme for me is courage, as it transforms ordinary people to become risk takers. I am interested in individuals who take necessary risks to make geographical or scientific discoveries or to attain personal goals. In the beginning I was developing a theme around athletes who overcame obstacles or pursued more dangerous explorations. Research into the early Arctic explorer, Robert Peary, inspired me to pursue the topic in paintings with contemporary adventurers. On this series of mountain and Arctic icescapes, I have worked in collaboration with explorer and climber, Steve Gardiner, as I have painted mountains as metaphors for challenges, danger, and risk. I have attempted to capture the quiet, isolation, and cold of these remote locations.
